Flat Track Roller Derby OPEN SCRIMMAGES

  • WHO: Participants must be a registered and insurance-validated RollerCon Skater Pass or MVP Passholder. Skaters must have passed the minimum skills to be an active bouting participant of their league, and must wear properly-fitting required safety gear including helmet, knee, elbow and wrist guards. Open scrimmages are played by the most recent version of WFTDA rules unless the schedule indicates otherwise.
  • BRING: Come prepared with black shirts and white shirts with a 4″ number (or larger). More about numbers if you scroll down here.
  • WHERE: C3 Scrimmage Track
  • WHEN: Check the schedule.
  • HOW: See our Scrimmage Rules below.

Please note: RollerCon scrimmages are sometimes restricted by skill level.

*Please note that if there are less than 20 skaters at any open scrimmage, it will be open to all skill levels and unrestricted.

Skill level restrictions are not negotiable. We ask you to self-assess your skill level and we trust you to be as accurate as you can, but that can be very difficult. But if the officials or safety team feel that your skating is not commensurate with the level for that hour or that you are unsafe for any other reason, you will be asked politely to sit out. Please do not be offended! No one wants to hurt your feelings, but everyone’s safety is important, including yours. There are a lot of options, including all levels, so please do not ask our officials to make an exception for you or let you “play down” – or up.  The answer is NO. Please check out our Skill Level definitions.

Open Skate

  • WHO: Participants must be a registered RollerCon Skater Pass or MVP Pass holder.
  • BRING: Yourself.
  • WHEN: Check the calendar
  • WHERE: Paradise Rinks (check the schedule)

Skaters are not required to wear safety gear for open skate, recreational skates and rink parties. Absolutely no contact beyond holding hands/ dance skating together is allowed, however. Our insurance requires that skaters wear all safety gear when performing roller derby-type contact. You know the difference. Please don’t make us lose our insurance!

187 Skate Park open skate
Participants must be a registered and insurance-validated RollerCon Skater Pass or MVP Passholder and must wear properly-fitting required safety gear including helmet, knee, elbow and wrist guards. For more info check out the Skateparks Page.

If you don’t see anything on the calendar, is it on the right date? You might have to click the “look for more” link to get to RollerCon dates.

OPEN SCRIMMAGE General rules:

  • NO LINE CUTTING! It’s okay to move back in line to go in with someone particular – but it IS NOT okay to jump forward in the line. No exceptions, including shuffling to line up for restricted jams. You (or your group) may move backwards, but not cut forward in line. Figure out who is jamming before you get to the front of the line!
  • We’re posting skill levels, but many people don’t assess themselves accurately. It’s wise to watch and gauge the intensity level before jumping in. Safety monitors, Officials and EMTs all have the authority to have you sit out if they are concerned for your (or anyone’s) safety.
  • You don’t have to be awesome. Advanced players can have as much fun offensive blocking for beginner jammers as they would in a jam with an advanced jammer, for example.
  • Hey, jammers, people don’t love it when they wait in line to play and the jammer calls it off after one scoring pass. And the overall points aren’t tracked, so there is no strategic reason to call a jam early. Give everyone a 2-minute turn. Pass the panty or try to run it out!
  • No one is judging you. No one cares. So don’t worry about doing good – HAVE FUN!
